2017 was a turning point with the competition decision taken by the European Commission regarding Google Shopping. The decision orders Google to treat rival comparison shopping services equally as compared to its own comparison service. In OIP’s view, this principle of equal treatment will also have to be implemented for other Google activities such as in the areas of maps, jobs, local, or travel search. It may also serve as a general principle for the treatment of companies by other online intermediaries with significant market power.
