The Open Internet Project welcomes the annual report on Competition Policy by MEP Ramon Tremosa i Balcells // Google Shopping by Open Internet Project

The association Open Internet Project (OIP) welcomes the annual report on Competition Policy by MEP Ramon Tremosa i Balcells as voted in ECON (European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs) last week. It calls on ensuring that Google effectively and promptly implements remedies on the comparison shopping market to prevent any further abuses of Google’s dominant position

Condemning all abuses of dominance in the European digital market, the OIP also supports ECON’s call on the European Commission to conclude all other pending antitrust investigations against Google in a timely manner, in particular regarding the Android mobile system.

Anti-competitive practices that harm European businesses and consumers have to be addressed more effectively. Therefore, the OIP particularly welcomes ECON’s encouragement of the European Commission to develop more effective policy and enforcement instruments to ensure a competitive growth of digital economies. This issue is fundamental and must become a central subject in the preservation of a pro-business environment in Europe. An entrepreneurial economy cannot develop where ultra-dominant companies can unilaterally impose anti-competitive conditions without having to fear any serious and timely regulatory sanctions.
